Getting started with Cadence PCB editor

Hello Guru's,

I'm a final year student with 12 weeks to design a PCB for my project.

The design is based on the rfPIC evaluaton board DV164102 - which is supplied from Microchip with a number of geber files

05-01726_rev_1.bot, 05-01726_rev_1.bsm ...etc

I would like to import and edit these files - and any help getting started would be appreciated!!

Cheers Stephen

Here's how to import the files.

Create a new board file and choose File > Import > Artwork... from the menu bar ("load photoplot" command, also called "load
gerber"). Browse for one of the films that you have downloaded, 05-01726_rev_1.bot say. The dialog box should change to show the correct Format, such as Gerber RS274X. Leave the Origin at its default of Absolute Origin. Select the appropriate class and subclass, Etch/Bottom in this case (shown by the extension on the filename), then click on Load file (not OK, which closes the dialog box, really irritating). A rectangle appears, centred on the cursor, so that you can place the imported image. Click on the P (Pick) button in the status bar below the windows, type coordinates of 0 0 into the Pick box and click Pick. This ensures that the image is precisely positioned so that all layers are correctly aligned. Repeat for the other films; the Pick box remains visible and holds its previous entry so you just have to click on Pick. Click OK when you have imported all the films.

You will be able to view the different layers of the PCB when the gerbers have been imported but editing is limited. Gerber files are just artwork - like a printout of the tracks or silkscreen of a PCB. They lack the underlying structure of the circuit, which requires the netlist.

    Good luck, John Davies

It would be more comfortable if use any of the Gerber Editor tools. This is more appropriate, for doing minor modifications in the Gerber files.

    Cheers!
