error before I can use Variant Editor

grrr

I would like to use Variant Editor to manage versions of my design.

I have generated schematics, and exported to the physical side.

Whenever I start up Variant Editor, I get the error "Variant Editor could not open the design view of <designname>."

 

Could anyone advise?
