Are looking to move from one layer to another quickly?  If so, you can set up your artwork layers (Manufacture>Artwork>Film Control tab) then move to those layers by using your Visibility>Views: pull-down menu.  Or you can record and scripts (File>Script...) to move quickly from layer to layer.

As stated above, use the film visibility.  Or you can use "Color Save".  I personally prefer film as it's faster (in my experience).

Allegro does not have inherent "one keypress" for layer like OrCAD or Altium -- but that said I dislike that method and prefer the visibility window to control.  There are some useful SKILL tools out there that enhance the built-in view to add quick on/off of other layers as well.

But...despite all those techniques you can assign a single key per layer... Our resident contributor Ole prefers this technique and has posted the method for assigning the keys.  I would link you there but I can't find the post (yet).

To expound on redwire's post for using views (color save). You can use common views for all designs which will be available in the Visibility tab

    1. Set the display to the visibility you want for the top layer also set the zoom level which you may use in step 3. This can include pins, vias, etch as well as any other class/subclass combinations you may want to see.
    2. Select View >Color View Save
    3. In the Color Views dialog set the View Replacement Method to Complete. You can also elect to save the zoom level by enabling/checking the Preserve zoom level checkbox. This will work if all of your designs have the same extents.Save this as "1". It will have the .color extension.
    4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for each layer saving the layers as 2,3,4... n

If you will use these for all designs you will want to save the color views to a common directory

    1. Select Setup > User preferences > Path > Config.
    2. Select the Viewpath  [...]
    3. Browse to a directory which you will keep these views.
    4. Move the views (.color) files to the common directory.

These views will now be available for use in the "Views" pulldown which is in the Visibility tab for all of your designs.

If you use designs with different extents you will have to use "zoom world" or "zoom fit"
