lots of vias to ground

I have a  symbol that requires 17 vias to ground in a pattern around the part. I can't see any other way to handle this but to add the 17 pins to the schematic symbol and net them to ground and in the symbol place the 17 vias. If there were a way to give each via a net name during symbol creation then that might work and wouldn't require all the pins in the schematic symbol.

Vias won't associate to the symbol pins.  They will associate to a net once you touch them to another net.

What you need to do is add the vias and a shape and tie one pin on the symbol that's attached to ground and run it over to the shape.

Check my understanding on this. Are you saying all I need to do is have a pin in the symbol that nets to ground then I can draw a shape in the symbol that connects to the pin and also sprinkle vias inside the shape. When I create the netlist the pin, shape and vias all net together? This is great if I'm understanding you correctly.

    Yes -- that's it.

I haven't been able to get the vias to work inside the symbol definition without also having an associated pin in the schematic symbol. The shape does pickup the net assigned to the pin in the symbol though so that's good.

Pin ties to via located in shape...should clean up the problem.  See picture.
