reference designator in schematic and symbol

I'm confused about something (normal) and that is I thought the reference designator name for the schematic symbol and the footprint symbol had to be the same. If a part symbol reference is LR2 then I thought the footprint reference lable should be LR* but from what I'm seeing all you need is the * in the footprint symbol and it doesn't matter what the reference designator on the schematic is named and it transfers to the layout properly.

Correct.  It is useful to have a R* or C*, U*, etc... if you're wanting to pre-place some components and need to remember what is what.  Otherwise the refdes in the symbol means nothing... meaning it can be anything.
