Exporting .IDF files

 Greetings,

Here's something a little bit different.  I have a customer that wants to do 3D modeling(using Solidworks) based on the .idf file. I generate .dxf all the time but the .idf generates 3D info (I think). Anyway, I export the .idf and the file is saved as a .bdf. Took the file to the mechanical engineers and the file is asking for .lib files associated with the project. I wasn't sure what kind of files these were so I dumped the .dra & .psm from my design but that wasn't the fix. Has anyone done this before? More & more I'm getting requests for 3D models of my designs. Any help would be great.

Cheers,

Sounds like you didn't realize that the IDF export actually generates two files.  I'm not familiar with Solidworks requirements, but here are some steps to try.

    Option 1:

When you export IDF files with default settings, you get two files; *.bdf (board info) and *.ldf (library info).  There's your board and library files.

    Option 2:

At the IDF Out window, set your File Name Type to PTC instead of IDF.  This will generate two files; *.emn (board info) and *.emp (library info).  Once again, there's your board and library files.

    Hope this helps.

     Randy,

You are right; I didn't know two types of files are generated. Per your advice, we're able to open in Solidworks.
