Allegro PCB: Any way to export a STEP file?

Our company has transitioned tools from Altium to Cadence and one of the features we have lost with Cadence is the ability to export the board outline to our mechanical engineers in a STEP format.

1.  Is there a way of exporting this from Allegro PCB?

2.  Do you have to buy some costly third party SW to do this? (I am already taking heat for the cost of Cadence versus Altium)

    Hello,

Allegro does not have the option to output a STEP File.  You can output either an IDF or IGES file from Allegro to Mechanical CAD systems.  IGES is a batch command outside of Allegro and IDF is accessible via the File > Export menu.

Preferred method is to output an IDF File which generates two output files, one being the board outline.  You have to configure the Filter in the IDF Export Form to specify what you want to outputted.(Board Outline, Holes, etc.)

    Hope this helps,
    Mike Catrambone

Thanks for the input, but reguardless of the "preferred method or output format", I need to generate a STEP file.

For the last 15-20 years the ME's have demanded another format so all the ME tools (Pro E, SolidWorks, AutoCAD) take the exports from Allegro.  STEP is not supported by all tools and it is a viewing geometry vs a design geometry.  Perhaps you need better ME's?

I was just looking for technical help, not a bunch of opinions on what tools mechanical engineers should be using.

So to summarize, there is no way to create a STEP file from Allegro PCB, something that can be done from tools that are a fraction of the cost.

LKSoft has STEP Converters for all major PCB Design Platforms, including Allegro. They are a pioneer in the STEP specification.

They also have a free STEP reader that can be downloaded.
