Allegro PCB editor for beginners

Hi All,

i've literally just fired up this tool for the first time today, i have zero experience of PCB layout (though i have experinece of IC layout which hope might help a little bit.)

Are there any quick start guides that anyone would recommend? Currently i'm working through a mass of documentation.

Anyway my first specific task is to create a footprint for new parts. We have a netlist for which we know some of the components have as yet no existing layout information. Can anyone tell me roughly how i should go about this this & what exactly is a padstack, is it related to footprint?

    Get the book "Complete PCB Design using OrCAD Capture and PCB Editor", it is available as an eBook from the publishers as well as "popular online book sellers". This covers much of what you will need for designing a PCB since it covers a lot about the tools and some PCB processing and manufacturing as well. It is not perfect but it will get you a head start...

    Basically, Padstacks make Footprints. Use the Pad Designer to design you padstacks, in PCB design, layers are usually logical, in the Pad Designer, that will be Begin Layer (usually the Top layer), End Layer (usually the Bottom layer), and Default Inner (all the other conductor layers) so that one padstack design will cover many different cross sections. For most applications, only the Regular Pad shapes are of concern, the Anti-Pad and Thermal Relief can be set to, or left at, "Null", the Anti-Pads and Thermal Reliefs will be looked after in PCB Editor for the dynamic shapes and the dynamic shape Global Parameters.

    Once you have the padstacks, use PCB Editor, File>New, Package Symbol, design it yourself, or Package Symbol (wizard), get the symbol generated from specified parameters, both methods will need to reference the padstacks.
