Allegro vs Expedition licensing

Does anyone else have a problem with the licensing being recognized for Allegro? the only way I can get it to work is if i boot Allegro first before anything else. then i boot Design Entry. after everything else, windows explorer etc. then i boot Expedition. If i boot expedition first I can not get Allegro to see the license, and i have to reboot my computer 3 or 4 times to get the license server to be right again. this has been going on since i loaded Allegro in August. the flexlm licensing has a conflict and Cadence and Mentor Graphics just want to point fingers. I contacted Flexlm and they sent me back to the original software people. I am tired of chasing my tail. Please can you help? Thank you.

Here are some things to look at, the Cadence related details are specific, any references to "other" vendors will be more generic for FlexLM licensing.

Use of Ports: Cadence uses port 5280 by default for lmgrd, you can fix the port for cdslmd with a "PORT=<nnnn>" statement at the end of the DAEMON line, like "DAEMON cdslmd <full_path> PORT=5281" to fix the vendor deamon on port 5281. This could be possible for other vendors depending upon the license format, see the FlexLM end user guide for possible configurations.

Separate the license managers: Setup a license manager service for each vendor, this means that you can use different version lmgrd components for each vendor, Cadence needs FlexLM 10.8.5.0 or 10.8.6.0, other vendors may not play well with later components, or they may require later components that the Cadence LM does not appreciate. You can also keep the licenses and log files apart to see what happens to each service.

Use CDS_LIC_FILE set for <port>@<server_name> and CDS_LIC_ONLY set to 1 for the Cadence product license source, this prevents the Cadence products from seaching the "generic" FlexLM license sources for possible license tokens.

Set an environment variable called CDS_LIC_QA_Test with a value of the full path and file name for a log file, like "C:\tmp\lic.log", when the product starts the log file will be written with the license checkout process, this will give you the license search path being tested and the results as each possible license token is checked - expect to see some "-18 , not supported" status in this file unless you have licenses for "everything" that the product might start from. This could give you a clue as to why you sometimes get granted a license token and sometimes do not. (Delete the variable after some testing otherwise the log file will grow and grow!)
