A beginner who doesn't know a difference between PCB and layout

 Hi guys, i need yor help.Some year ago I used orcad 9.11 and there was the tool layout.

Today O retured to orcad (16.3) and i saw the presence of PCB but not layout also if in the "create netlist"of Capture there is still the tab for layout. Someone can help meif there is a difference or it's an evolution? Also because in pcb editor, i can t use tech file, .mnl file etc..Thank you!

    "Layout" was the name of the PCB design tool from OrCad back in the 90's.
    "Allegro" is the name of the PCB design tool from Cadence.

    Cadence bought OrCad and over time Layout has been removed from the product list and now "PCB Editor" is a re-name of "Allegro".

    You can use the converter tool to import an old OrCad Layout file into Allegro but you have to learn Allegro at some time.

     Thank you redwire!

    Now i have a question: if Allegro is an historical evolution of Layout, why i can't find tech files or the option to load nml file? Probably because i can't use PCB editor, so, can you link me a tutorial?

     Allegro and Layout are totally different. Allegro is not an evolution of Layout. I think redwire is just saying that Cadence has made Allegro their PCB design tool of the present and future, and as such Layout Plus is going bye-bye.

    Check out $CDSROOT\doc\algrotutorial\algrotutorial.pdf for help getting started with Allegro. Although there are lots of buried options and lots to master, that should get you started. You can find an example board at $CDSROOT\share\pcb\examples\board_design.

     Excuse me EvanShultz, now i have confused ideas. The problems are two:

    1)I thought orcad layout was used to create printed circuit so i don't find a real difference in the purpose with PCB...

    2)I don't find a layout tool in my orcad. May it be? In cadence site, http://www.ema-eda.com/OrCADLayout/default.aspx, it's written there is end of life process for layout, so i think even i can export a mnl  file from capture, i cant'use because there isn't layout tool

     .You may be having a barrier with your comprehension of the original response provided albeit short it was eloquently written for subsequent understanding by all those for whom it was intended.

    Layout = no longer exists

    Allegro = PCB Layout = the tool that's been around for about 20 years.

    You need to purchase the OrCAD PCB suite or Allegro PCB suite that includes OrCAD to be able to do layout.
