Orcad Capture CIS or Design Entry HDL?

Hi All,

Using SPB16.3. I've used the physical viewer for a while, but now I need to create my first schematic. I tried Orcad CIS, but I'm having trouble finding tutorials on this, especially about creating symbols. I need to create several ICs. So my questions are:

1. Should I use Orcad CIS or Design Entry HDL to create my schematic?

2. I know HDL has a tutorial  available, but where can I find something on Orcad CIS?

3. Can I cross probe fom either one to PCB editor?

I've used Pcad, Pads, and Boardstation in the past, so I'm very familiar with schematics and PC boards. I just need to be pointed in the right direction for Cadence. The menu of tools is confusing to me. I would prefer Orcad.......if I can find some info on it. Thanks!

If you use lot of constraints for PCB Layout upfront in your schematic, you may want to go for Design Entry HDL. In general perception OrCAD CaptureCIS offers better ease of use.

You can find details about how to create symbol in OrCAD Capture CIS in Capture user Guide, chapter 3 "Opening and developing part
libraries". You can access this book from Cadence online help, or by directly opening cap_ug.pdf from <INSTALLDIR>\doc\cap_ug\cap_ug.pdf

OrCAD Capture CIS PCB Editor supports bidirectional cross probing. You first need to turn on InterTool Communication in OrCAD Capture CIS (Option>Preference> Miscellaneous ). Then select Part in capture to highlight in pcb editor, use highlight command in pcb editor to cross probe from PCB Editor to Capture.
