Urgent BOM error needs fixing

I'm using OrCAD Capture CIS 16.3 (don't see "capture" or "schematic" forum, I think I have the correct forum) My Bill of Materials freshly output from the program doesn't match the schematic. Looking at a part's properties, I now see for the first time two lines associated with one part. The first line has a white background and the wrong OLD reference designator. The second line has a yellow backgroiund and the correct NEW reference designator after I back annotated from my schematic. The new reference designator matches what I see on the schematic page. I've back annotated before and have never seen this. How do I make the yellow line the only line (and I guess no longer yellow), or how do I re-run back annotation to get rid of this double line situation. Thanks very much

I got my BOM fixed, but still need to get rid of the yellow lines.

Specifically, I found something via Google about instances and occurences.  I found a radio button on the Tools / Bill of Materials window that I never needed to check before.  Changing it from Use Instances to Use Occurences (Preferred) made the BOM correct.  Don't know how it got set to Use Instances.  Must have been a stray finger bump on a key, causing hot key change of radio button.

Regardless, I've never seen the yellow lines in the part properties. This is a recipe for future error, so I want to get rid of the white lines and keep the yellow lines.  How do I do that, please?  How did this come about in the first place, when it hasn't happened before on the dozen boards I've designed in the last 1+ year of using OrCAD.

     Thanks very much.

You're seeing instance vs occurrences (white vs yellow).  Mostly there for hierarchical designs as one logical block can represent multiple physical blocks.

You just need to generate the BOM in the correct mode.  There is a utility on the OrCAD toolbar to push all the occurrences back into the instances (or vv).  For a flat design that will get rid of the "yellow" lines.

Might want to read up on these two modes that have been around since the 9.xx release.  Before that they were known as logical and physical modes and a lot of people got confused so they fixed it :)

redwire, thanks for the help.  I'll follow through on that.  Did I accidently turn on a mode that was off before?

BTW, I've never found any decent doc to read for OrCAD, anyway.  It's been impossible to find the answer if you don't already know it, and I've been doing this kind of thing as an expert for 31 years.  I have cap_ug.pdf for capture, but have NEVER found any reasonable doc on the PCB Editor.

To be fair, I just searched for "yellow" in cap_ug.pdf, and the first hit mentions occurrences.  I didn't "waste" my time looking there first, however, because it has failed me so often before. I next find a section on "Instances and Occurrences".  Thanks.

Back to OrCAD PCB Editor, all I have are screen captures of the half the tutorial, that aren't live accessible any more due to software security features.  Do you know the name of what to ask for to get something half as good as cap_ug.pdf (which I call not very good)?  For example, I'm currently having problems with the drill legend, but have not yet sought to correct it.  Just got a call yesterday from board house, that symbols in art don't match legend.  It wasn't that I changed things and failed to recreate the legend.  Also, the legend is totally missing some drills.  It's a mess.  Even if it is in the doc somewhere, it shouldn't be this complicated.  (Now I'm ranting.  I've been writing complex software for over 31 years.  I'm very good at it.  OrCAD is extremely powerful yet among the worst software user interface wise that I've ever, ever used.  I've gotten grief on this forum for saying this before, but I know it's true.  I'm not dumb.  The UI is horrible.)

    Thanks again.

The instances / occurences mode happens (as redwire stated) when you use hierarchical designs or if you apply high speed constraints (like relative propagation delay) into Capture so that it is read by constraint manager in the PCB Tool. It's an automatic switch that happens if your design uses these functions. If the do not it stays in instances mode.

In the doc folder has all the useful pdf's (like cap_ug). Have a look at algroman.pdf (Allegro Manufacturing). Have a look in the doc folder for algro (allegro) then libdev (library development) or route (routing) etc.
