16.5 Licensing – What is included/not included with a seat of Allegro PCB Designer?

Has anyone looked into the new Allegro 16.5 product offerings?  In reviewing the product matrix the higher tier Allegro PCB Design XL has been broken down into multiple options (High Speed / Miniaturization) to work with Allegro PCB Designer 16.5 (AKA Allegro PCB Performance Option L).  I am OK with this change because it does give you a little more flexibility.

My issue is related to Allegro Design Authoring (DE-HDL) which according to the product matrix is included with the new Allegro PCB Designer 16.5 license.   When I open up Project Manager and select the Allegro PCB Designer license I do have the ability to run either Design Entry HDL or Allegro PCB Designer (Layout) but when I open the schematic and the layout at the same time it checks out two Allegro PCB Designer licenses.

Maybe I am selecting the wrong product (license) during startup or maybe it is just the way it works in 16.5 but I cannot see tying up two Allegro PCB Designer licenses when all I want to do is cross probe between DE HDL and Allegro.

Has anyone seen this using a new 16.5 license and could possible shed some light on the subject?

Thanks in advance,
Mike Catrambone

Is Allegro_performance checked by concepthdl.exe as well?  In my example I only executed allegro.exe once. I am running everything in 16.5.

If I just run Concept HDL from Project Manager it checks out an Allegro_performance license then if I run Allegro it grabs another Allegro_performance license. NOTE: I am selecting Allegro PCB Designer (Layout) from the Cadence Product Choices form.

I will load the Hotfix tonight and give it another try to see if it acts differently.

    Thanks, Mike

Allegro.exe should be the only tool that will check-out a Allegro_performance license (just like 16.3). If you start multiple copies of Allegro PCB Designer on the same workstation, you will see multiple license check-outs of this option.

It would be a bug if ConceptHDL checks-out the Allegro_performance license. It should only check-out a PCB_design_studio license.

Thanks to everyone that responded and checked into this. After loading the Hotfix S014 for 16.5 the issue was resolved and opening up Design Entry HDL and Allegro PCB from inside Project Manager now only checks out 1 Allegro PCB Designer license.  We just loaded Hotfix S011 in December so it was a somewhat recent fix.

One thing to note:  This is the second Hotfix issue that we had with the new 16.5 Licenses.   We had a similar situation on 16.3 which required us to load Hotfix S031 or higher so we had access to the bundled XL Licenses on 16.3.  After loading the latest Hotfix new products appeared in the Product Choices form labeled "(16.5 Licenses)" which would grab the options license pieces (High Speed/Miniaturization) to form the legacy 16.3 XL License.

    Mike,

The latest hot fix for 13.6 (ISR #41) fixes some additional issues with the 16.5 licenses on 16.3.

Is there a cosmetic variation when concept logical symbol created in 16.3 version is opened in 16.5 version.
