Error installing Cadence Orcad Lite 16.5: HOMEPATH

The orcad lite installer is not working on my rig, a standard XP Pro SP3 OS.  The error is as follows:

The folder you have specified could not be created. Please specify another folder.

Folder entered: HOMEPATH

 Return value: 1

Error Identification Number: 1058

It appears that the installer has an internally ill-defined macro (HOMEPATH). Can this be fixed? This occurrs with and without specifying the install folder to be in "Program Files".

In fact Windows already has an "ill defined" Environment Variable named HOMEPATH which is where you troubles are coming from. Specify the path for your homepath directly in the dialog, or use another path for "HOME"

Hi, thank you for your reply.  The only path that the installer allows me to specify is the installation folder, not my users home path or drive.  Because of this, no matter what installation folder I set, it always gives this 'HOMEPATH' error and fails.  Fixes likely require a change to the installer:

    1) Allow users to enter a 'home' path in the GUI

    2) Allow users to specify a home path with command line option switches, like:

    setup.exe /h "C:/Documents and Settings/Myuser"

I have tried manually setting the HOMEPATH and HOMEDRIVE environment varaibles in a cmd session, and running setup from there but it still fails.

Try the following and see if this works

Bring up  System Properties dialog, go to Advanced TAB, select Environment Variable button.

Create a user variable named "HOME" and assign a valid folder (you should have write permission  there) ex: create a folder in C drive say "MyHome" and assign value C:\myhome to HOME env variable

Make sure that you do not have another HOME variable set at "System" leve. Say OK and close the system properties dialog.

    Try running the installation.

Thank you for that woraround, it worked.  I had been trying to modify HOMEPATH because that's what it was complaining about, but changing HOME was what fixed it.  As it turns out, HOME was valid: a network drive "U:\"  constructed from HOMEDRIVE (U:) and HOMEPATH (\) appended together, however, the installer didn't check for a trailing backslash and was trying to append backslashes to this, resulting in U:\\somepath which isn't valid.  By changing the HOME to "U:" it works, as well as changing it to "C:\Documents and Settings\MyUser".  I've installed many programs on this box and never had this problem before, I guess the other installers have all been smart enough to construct a path correctly with or without a pre-existing trailing backslash.

One note:  After changing the HOME entry for the installation, it you have keep it the same indefinitely for Orcad to be able to work properly, or it will complain about not being able to find profile files.
