Custom PAD = Error SPMHUT-41

Hi,

I'm trying to create a custom pad with a special shape for the thermal pad of a DFN package.

To do so, I create a special shape with PCB designer, choosing new>shape symbol. I saved it a a .ssm file. Now, I need to create a new padstack, so I open pad_designer, I select a layer (begin layer for example). Geometry is a shape, but when I select my cutom shape I have an error, called SPMHUT-41.

What is the meaning of this error? I tried with other shapes and I've the same issue!

Please find attached a screenshot of Pad_designer and the siymbol in .ssm and .dra format. It was created using the 16.5 release of ORCAD

The dra file you attached is not the same name but also is a Flash symbol type and should be a shape symbol type. Open the dra file the setup - design parameters - Design Tab and change the Drawing type from Flash to Shape, the save the symbol (which will re-create the ssm file).

The dra filre and the associated *sm file must have the same name and be in the same location (windows directory). Here's a link to a PDF http://www.parallel-systems.co.uk/images/PDF/Alternate_shaped_pads.pdf that creates a shape synbol.

Ho, it's right, I made some tests and forgot to erase the bad files,

So, I've erased all the bad files, kept only the good shape in a "shape type" .dra file called TPad1.dra and generade the correponding tpad1.ssm again. Both file are in the same folder (c:\symbols) (as you can see in the screenshot attached)

But, again, I found this shape in Pad_Designer, but when I select it, I've the same error, shown on the screenshot of my first post.

Attached, I put the .dra and the .ssm files. If you manage to create a padstack with this shape, that means that the problem comes from Pad_Designer and not from the shape itself.

Could you do that for me?

Again, thank you for your time!!

    Etienne

The Shape works and so does the resulting pad. What Hotfix version are you on ? If you go to Help - About check to see what it says. If it says 16.5 p001 then you are on the base release. Go to your VAR or Cadence direct and get the latest Hotfix then try again.

OK, maybe not a good news!!

According to the hotfix, it's the lastest one, S025, from july of this year.

Try launching Pad Designer from within PCB Editor (Tools - Padstack - Modify Design Padstack then do a File - New once open and try the steps again.
