PCB Designer Help for newbie / PADS user

Hi, Everybody:

Well, this is embarrasing, but I cant get anything but a blank screen.

I am using a brand new installation of PCB designer 16.6, and loading fulladd.brd from the tutorial, but I don't see anything at all on the screen. I have fooled around with every color or visibility dialog I can find, but no luck. I must have the display turned off in some way, I just can't find it. I get the same results when I try to inport a PADS ASCII as well, it says import was successful, but I don't see anything.

Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

Thanks!

    Hi,

It's a little hard to say without some addtional information.

Try opening the cds_routed.brd located here: C:\Cadence\SPB_16.6\share\pcb\examples\board_design. Watch the command for any errors.

I would also suggest you contact your Cadence Cahnnel partner.

    Hi, Bill:

Well, that file loads and displays just fine. Perhaps fulladd.brd was not a good choice, and the PADS import may have had other issues. Any general advice for importing from PADS?

    Thanks!

When you import a netlist the parts are imported but not placed - hence a blank screen. Go to Place - Manually and you should see a list of the parts from your netlist. Check the checkbox next to a refdes name and move you mouse (don't drag) into the window and the part should be attached to your mouse ready to place.

For the Pads import if it translates successfully you then need to open that board file name. Go to file - Open and locate the board file you cretaed with the import.

    Thanks, everyone for your replies!

After loading the example file it now works normally. I have no idea what was wrong, perhaps there is some oddity with a new installation being used for the first time? At first, loading the supplied example files didn't even generate the warning about file version, just a blank screen.Whatever the cause, all is well now, I was able to load the PADS file and make the needed edits and produce good Gerbers.

    Regards,

    -Gene
