Allegro Free Physical Viewer 16.6 Will Not Run

bresna
bresna over 12 years ago

I am bringing this to the community because I have not been able to get this resolved through Cadence support so here goes...

Back in early February, several product engineers running Windows 7 on Dell laptops at the large company I work at downloaded and installed Allegro Free Physical Viewer 16.6. We needed to upgrade to 16.6 to be able to open .brd created by our PCB layout group, who recently updated their layout tool. We use Allegro Free Physical Viewer to review PCB layouts prior to ordering them so it is important to be able to open them conveniently.

Since February 12, 2013, no one has been able to run Allegro Free Physical Viewer 16.6. There is an error screen at start up that says "The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail." Because of this error, we have been unable to review files on our own PC. This is going on 5 weeks now.

Nothing we have done has fixed this. Cadence support has sent me to several websites to download 3rd party software patches ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=200B2FD9-AE1A-4A14-984D-389C36F85647&displaylang=en & http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&FamilyID=766a6af7-ec73-40ff-b072-9112bab119c2) as well as download a patched(?) version of Allegro Free Physical Viewer at http://www.cadence.com/downloads/allegro/16.6/allegro_free_viewer_16-6.zip. None of these things have worked.

Has anyone else seen this problem? Has anyone solved this problem?

Thanks,

Kevin

    Try this link:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/junfeng/archive/2006/04/14/576314.aspx

The Event Viewer has some more precise details of exactly what is missing and there are some notes on running the sxstrace, it looks like you need to kick this off with "Run as Administrator" if UAC is enabled to get sufficiently elevated rights to get the trace. Once identified, you should then be able to download the required run-time from the links provided, or search the Microsoft site for a download containing the missing components.

I did this for the Allegro support tech and e-mailed thelog. He was unable to tell me what to do. The log outputs the following:

Had the same problem. Did the Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 redistributable install OK?

Did you downloaded the correct (x86!) version? The 64bit doesn't work.

My C++ installation stopped with a 'Error 1935". Turns out I needed to disable/turn-off the .NET3.51 from Windows, then the C++ redis installed OK. After this the viewer runs ok.

I still can't understand why Cadence didn't provided this C++ in the installer package...

Thanks for the advice. Although I was already able to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 redistributable (as well as the 2008 & 2010 versions), I re-installed it again with .NET3.51 turned off and still no luck.

No matter how many times I install any version of Visual C++, I can't get rid of this Side-by-side error.

Right now I'm trying to repair my .NET installation to see if that does anything.

I have tried the currently posted Free viewer 16.6 version, which lists Windows 8 support, on both Windows 7 and Windows 8 Professional 64-bit and it runs just fine for me in both installations. Maybe its worth getting a download of that and trying it?
