Use component with same reference designator twice?

Hi,

I have 2 circuits that are almost identical and have components that similar. I want both of these circuits to be manufactured on the same PCB. In the past, I created a single schematic with two pages and each of the components that are similar between the schematics I suffix a "_1" or "_2" onto the reference designators (and net aliases) that way the netlist will succesfully complete and the PCB editor properly recongnizes each component.

Problems with this are that it makes the reference designator 2 characters longer, annotation is no longer an option, and it is hard to keep track of when you have say 10 almost identical circuits.

Is it possible create two different schematics and use the same reference designator and net aliases between the two while still allowing both components to be imported into the same PCB? I have tried this with two of the exact same components on two seperate schematics but when I ran the netlist it only netlists the first schematic and ignores the other...

WHY: Cost of manufacturing two PCB boards is twice as much as manufacturing one slightly larger PCB board.

Net names are unique i.e. two circuits will be connected together when they have identical netnames. You can also create modules, but you should rather use some tool which can panelize your manufaturing data (gerbtool etc.)
