Windows 7 - Allegro Network files slow

I have both an XP box and a windows 7 Box attached to our corporate network.  Both have the same releases of the Cadence tools and same Cadence service pack/Hot fix releases (up to date as of 7/29/2013)

Issue:

Windows 7 box - exporting libraries to the network server takes over 15minutes (hard disk about 10 seconds)

Windows XP box - exporting libraries to the network server takes under 1 minute (hard disk about 10 seconds)

Things we have tried:

The PC boxes next to each other, same version of the tools (tried 16.3, 16.5 , 16.6 all releases behave the same).

Swapped Nic cards, no difference

Swapped Ethernet ports, no difference

Changed many of the settings in the windows environment, i.e. Auto detect speed changed to 1G, 100M, 10 M, Full / half duplex,etc...

My IT team is very puzzled and has run out of ideas.

 

Other symptoms:  Win 7 Box - generating artwork first time is fast, but if there are existing files, very slow upwards of  5 minutes.  Saving a file to a new file name - fast (realm of seconds), re-saving to current file name slow (realm of minutes).

Box details:

Box1 Intel Xeon CPU E3-1225 @ 3.2 GHz with 16 GB RAM,  Service Pack 1 (Win 7)

Box2 Windows XP box is a DEL 780, Intel® Core™2 Quad, 4GB Service Pack 3 (Win XP)

    Is the server you are sending the data to a windows 2003 server or windows server 2008 ? If it is windows server 2008 there is a good chance the the actual packets are getting scaled and that is why the xp box seems faster.

    There is an easy test to confirm. Grab a large file 100mb or more and copy it from your client pc's to a shared folder on the server, make a note of the time it took.

    Fyi core networking for smb and how the OS handles transfers of packets over the LAN has changed a whole lot since the release of win7 and win server 2008. If that server is 2008 have them look into tcpip scaling and how to disable it on the server.

    For file saving on the win7 box there have been hot fixes from back when vista was released to address slow file transfer. On the win7 machine it is possible your anti virus software is causing this slow write issue. If using windows defender try disable the service for it by way of a test and see how your file writes go. Believe your issues are not with the cadence software but with the actual win7 OS. If your IT folks do a search for win7 slow file transfer delete copy etc they will find many complaints about this in particular for all MS os from Vista to win 8

    Many thanks for the reply.

    I believe the server is running 2008 R2, asking IT to confirm.

     

    Copied a 560 MB file to the server, took approximately 15 seconds.

     Windows 7 Professional Version service Pack 1

    Anit virus is Sophos

     

    Will share this with my IT department.

    Will advise of any replys.

     After struggling with this issue for several months, my IT team resloved this issue.

    Sophos version 10 

    The server was running a virus scan on writes .

    My PC was running virus scans on reads, writes and renames.

    Once the settings on my pc was change to scan on read and writes only, this issue disappeared.
