OrCAD 16.6 for Circuit Design

Hi,

I am new to OrCAD and here are my queries:

  • Can I use OrCAD 16.6 for Circuit Design? as this software have some powerful tools like Capture & Capture CIS.
  • Do we need Virtuoso Schematic Editor for that?
  • What is the main difference between Capture & Capture CIS?
  • Can we simulate any kind of circuit in pspice?
Thanks in Advance.

Basically: Yes - Capture is a schematic design entry tool. CIS refers to associated "parts database" access capabilities. Nice but not required. You just have to generate all your own parts symbols, which most often is required anyway. P-Spice is a very capable tool, so not sure what you mean by "any type". Regards,

    Hi,

By "any type" I referred to analog & digital circuits both. If circuit designing can be done by OrCAD then why a seperate platform like Virtuoso Schematic Editor? Also I am unable to find a circuit design forum of OrCAD. So I posted under PCB Design. What are the advantages of Allegro over OrCAD?

    Thanks & Regards,

    Tanmay

Just to confuse everyone I think - just kidding.  Some history - -

Schematic capture/edit, simulation, pcb/physical design have historically always been done by separate "tools" sometimes integrated into a collective suite/or package.  Cadence is no different.

Some years back OrCad was a separate company that has been around for many years and was bought by Cadence.  OrCad was Schematic capture but had its own PCB tool called PCB Layout.  The Cadence PCB layout tool was called Allegro and was very high end in capabilities and cost.  After the merger, Cadence offered multiple bundles of OrCad/Allegro combination with a limited functionality Allegro tool being referred to as PCB Designer. After version 16.2, Cadence stopped supporting the original Orcad PCB Layout tool in place of their own.

PSpice has and is a separate company and tool that has been around for many years.  Cadence bundles it, for simulation, with their Orcad packages now under the license name of EE Designer.  They also offer bundles with HDL Designer for schematic editor instead of the OrCAD Capture schematic editor.

Now, Virtuoso is their latest offering of a bundled suite of tools.  I am not familiar with those.  All I can really recommend is go to the website and look around for comparative "feature charts" of the various tool suites.

Basically, the more $$ you pay, the more features they enable - - -  call your Cadence/OrCad re-seller for more marketing and sales info.

    Regards,

You asked about the advantages of Orcad versus Allegro. If you mean Orcad Layout versus Allegro then you are comparing PCB design tools.

In my opinion, Allegro and Orcad Layout are not in the same league. Allegro is a high end tool and Layout is more of a Low to mid range tool. Which is best for you? That depends on what you are designing and your budget.
