Associating multiple symbols with one package

Much like there are two symbols available for a resistor -- horizontal and vertical -- I have a second symbol for a part that I want to associate with the same package that already has one symbol associated with it.  I have successfully created the symbol, but it is orphaned . . . it has no associated package (see attached image).  I want to associate this new second symbol with the existing package.  Have searched documentation and forums to no avail.  Any suggestions?

Using Part Developer in Allegro DEHDL 16.5.

Are the pin names for sym_2 identical to sym_1?  If so, I think it should associate itself just by clicking on it.

From the tree view in my included image above, I expected to be able to right click on a symbol and then be able to explicitly specify its association with which functional group in which package and then any errors would be reported that would make the association invalid/broken . . . Allegro doesn't work that [intuitive] way.

When I edited a copy of sym_1, which became sym_2, in order to put inputs on the left, outputs on the right, bubbles on active low inputs and outputs, and group signals logically -- performing a general refinement of the original coarse symbol which had to be preserved for historic reasons -- I had deleted an NC pin and this broke the association.  Adding the NC pin back to sym_2 automatically created the association like you said.  I must have ignored the original error since I could place the symbol on the schematic and now am dealing with it during packaging.

Playing around while trying to recreate what I did, Allegro does give an error when saving  the part after the NC pin is deleted on sym_2 and states to use the "Interface Comparison" tool to determine the mismatch between package and symbol pins.  Alas, this extremely complex capability to do a side by side listing of pin names requires a higher level license.
