pxl.exe has stopped working

When I try to export physical, I get a windows error box that says "pxl.exe has stopped working". I click close the program a Design Sync error shows "Error: PXL Failed. Unable to package the design. Do you wish to view the pxl.log file?" If I click yes, it fails to open the documents, presumably because it was never generated. I saw an article that said this could be cause by having multiple paths in the $path environmental variables. I looked and didn't see anything but did a system restore to the last time that it worked anyway. It did not fix it.

Any ideas?

What version of the tools are you running?  Can you post a snapshot of your path?

Sorry I forgot to include that.

     Allegro Design Entry HDL 16.6

    User variable Path: %CDSROOT%\openaccess\bin\win32\opt;%CDSROOT%\tools\capture;%CDSROOT%\tools\pspice;%CDSROOT%\tools\specctra\bin;%CDSROOT%\tools\fet\bin;%CDSROOT%\tools\libutil\bin;%CDSROOT%\tools\bin;%CDSROOT%\tools\pcb\bin;C:\Program Files\Intel\WiFi\bin\;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intel\WirelessCommon\

The variable CDSROOT is my install directory: C:\Cadence\SPB_16.6

The system variable PATH only has one listing c:\program files\someworksoftware\...

    Few more questions.

Can you be more specific on version?  16.6-?

Did you confirm that the pxl.log file is really not created?

Is %CDSROOT% rectifing itself to C:\Cadence\SPB_16.6 in your path?

Allegro Design Entry HDL version 16.6-S026  3/24/2014

I searched for pxl.log and the newest date was prior to this problem starting.

I'm not sure if there is a specific way to test the %CDSROOT%. I opened a command prompt and type "cd %CDSROOT%" and it took me to the correct directory so I think it is working ok.

I would try starting a new project and try packaging in that new project (just add one part).  That will determine if something is, or is not, corrupt in your project folder.  Since it was working previously and nothing has changed, corruption in some file would be my first guess.
