Copy Existing Package Symbol In brd File to new Design. [SOLVED]

Hello,

I acquired a reference design from Atmel for one of their evaluation boards.  I can fully edit both the schematic and layout as you'd expect.

I'm now going to create a custom PCB using some of the parts in the reference design.  In the schematic I can simply copy symbols into my library and reuse them.

Is there a way to do the same with the symbols in layout?

The idea is, copy the symbol, then create a new symbol file, assign name, and paste copied symbol, save.

Is this possible?  Since these package symbols (footprints) are used in the eval boards I'd hate to reinvent the wheel specially since all the symbols contain no errors (they are being used to produce eval boards).

 I'd appreciate any help.

Thanks.

     Hello,

You can always do File -> Export... -> Libraries...

Select all relivant check boxes and a destination folder.

This will dump out all footprints and pads to the selected directory.

    Regards,

    Johan

IMPORTANT!!!  The note by Johan Javinder (above) is great. However, you must be on the SCHEMATIC editing screen, when you do File -> Export... -> Libraries.

If you do this from the BOARD editing screen, the export will APPEAR to be successful, but it actually WON'T be. You will even be able to see the .lbr file in your libraries (if you have added the path to the appropriate directory, as in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8PwimdBzN6E ). However, when you go to the SCHEMATIC of your board and click on Add Part, the library won't appear in the list of components. The .lbr file created when you do File -> Export... -> Libraries on the SCHEMATIC editing screen is not the same as the .lbr file which is created when you do File -> Export... -> Libraries on the BOARD editing screen. The .lbr file created from the SCHEMATIC editing screen contains much more information, and you will likely see it takes much longer to "build" the .lbr file. (I'm not sure, but when the .lbr file is created from the BOARD editing screen, it might be quicker because it's only creating a file for the "packages/footprints".)
