STEP file/ref desig

I recently took a PCB Editor STEP file I made and imported it into ProE....then made a 3D pdf out of it. Our customer loved it that they could rotate it...zoom and even take measurements off the pdf. But they asked for the ref designators to be part of the STEP. I'm pretty sure it cant but figured let me ask here. No go right?

TIA!

Have you just tried importing the EMN and EMP files into Pro-E and then exporting a STEP from Pro-E? All of the reference designators are imported into Pro-E this way.

That's how I used to do it with Orcad 9.2....then the ProE engineer would mate up the STEP files. But if I remember right it was a pain for him to use the EMN/EMP files so they stopped offering to do it. But not a bad idea to try that again with 16.6. I have one other idea to try too so maybe this can be done. Thanks!

Have to try again tomorrow....the emp file was locking up ProE but the engineer doing it is new to Pro E. But I'm thinking....will this method show the 3D STEP parts that we see when using 16.6's STEP function? Or will it just show the "blocks" till the ProE guy adds the 3D parts in? TIA

ProE will just show blocks until you get the models built for ProE.  That the way we do it here.  I actually build the schematic symbol, footprint and 3D model all at the same time.  Saves the mechanical guys a lot of time.

He imported in the IDF files but didn't see any silk. But you give the ProE guy the STEP parts you have with the Orcad footprint? Then the ProE guy has to put the STEP part with its footprint?  The IDF files don't have STEP info in them or do they?

Right now I have STEP parts tied to the footprint parts in my libraries. So when I make the pcb and use 3D view within 16.6 you see all of them. If the silk could show up with that STEP file I'd be golden as using ProE we can remove any component real easily....then make the 3D pdf of it. Everyone loved it....just need the darn silk layer. We had one more idea of me making the silk as a DXF and the ProE guy thought he could lay that over the pcb he see's.
