Via Stitching

More noob questions.  I have a small 4 layer board and would like to stitch the ground plane with the top and bottom pours with vias on a grid.  This brings up a number of noob questions:

1.  How do you place a via?  I only know how to place a via in the course of routing a trace (right click -> add via).

2.  Is there a way to turn off pours?  I go into the "Visibility" tab and turned off the power and ground planes, but I don't know how to turn off the top and bottom layer ground pours.

That's the way to place a via, then you can Copy to get more, there is a setting on the Options tab when copying to "retain net on vias", or you can set the option for the net in Constraint Manager, Properties domain, Net, General Properties, set the value of the "Retain net of vias" cell to On from the drop-down. Allegro PCB Designer has Place>Via Arrays which adds some automation to placing via arrays. You cannot turn the pours off but you can make them transparent, if OpenGL is enabled, from Display>Color / Visibility, Layers section, Display, OpenGL group, set Shapes to Transparent.

For adding of vias you can also double click which will add a via when in the Route - Connect command, you can also make copies of vias. Check out this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cc-oxewXcwg
