one symbol, multiple footprints

docb

I have a resistor symbol set up to use a through hole footprint.

If I want that to be SMT, I have to manually type that smt name instead? It would be nice if I could assign a few different footprints, to my resistor symbol, and then just select.

Am I missing a basic feature that exists?

There is a way, add a property to the part called ALT_SYMBOL and in this property add the alternative footprints separated by a comma so 0805,1206,1210 etc. When you place the part in PCB Editor you can use right click Alt Symbol and pick from the list. As others have mentioned this goes against a proper flow because part numbers would be different between 0603 and 0805 but if that's what you want to do...... The actual reason for the alt_symbol allows users to have a different footprint based on space limitations (min, nominal, max) or a different footprint for reflow / wave soldering.

Thanks Steve. It looks like ALT_SYMBOLS will allow this.

And in CIS you can add as many footprints as you want to a symbol.  The problem?  Most companies don't want a *single* part number to represent *different* part types -- just equivalent part types.

It seems as though you've uncovered the key word for adding multiple symbols though :)

Steve with the ALT_SYMBOLS attribute in capture I am guessing one would still have to have a base footprint assigned to the symbol otherwise the design wont package ?, Over on the board side of things if an alternate symbol is used can the schematic then be back annotated so the schematic symbol footprint matches what's on the board ?. Appreciate the insight on your post above. Thanks Scott

Correct you still need to populate the PCB Footprint property. The ALT_SYMBOLS property contains ALL the symbols you have in the schematic. Back Annotate won't change the PCB Footprint name with the ALT_SYMBOL property. As I mentioned earlier it's mainly for MIN,NOM,MAX or different reflow footprints but in this example will help with docb's issue. I would still recommend having a PART NUMBER driven system like CIS....
