one symbol, multiple footprints

I have a resistor symbol set up to use a through hole footprint.

If I want that to be SMT, I have to manually type that smt name instead? It would be nice if I could assign a few different footprints, to my resistor symbol, and then just select.

Am I missing a basic feature that exists?

This feature does not exist in capture. Only work around is to have individual symbols in a library that map to a specific footprint. This is kind of less error prone than what you are after, but still it would be useful for capture to have the feature you want. It would make the design process easier IMHO. Thanks Scott

This is why the CIS was introduced. In real life a device with a given (mfg/supplier) partnumber doesn't have two footprints.

You are correct but while a given P/N may change between MFR's the actual Symbol and footprint will be the same. A good example of this would be pretty much any passive component such as a resistor. Correct me if I am wrong but the feature you are after is this. You place a resistor symbol on a schematic and when you click on the symbol you get a choice of footprints that can be used with that symbol ?

    Yes ScottCad.

I might draw a schematic with 0603 resistors, then decide to use some 805s. It would be nice to just pull down and select between them.

The was it is now, we have 0603 symbols and 0805 symbols each linked to their footprint. If I change to 0805, I have to delete the 0603 in the schematic, and add it again as an 0805.

    Is there a better way?

    Yes there is!
You make a part database where there are many parts e.g resistors from different mfr's/suppliers with different power rating (footprint) to choose from. This way the BOM is ready to place your order.
