PCB design software for Linux machine

Hi jch,

1. Thanks for the "design manager" tip! It looks like what I wanted. Sometimes it's hard to pinpoint the relevant info with Cadence products.

2. I have access to the DOCs which include training videos, yes, and for now it seems like the DE-HDL tutorial includes both project and schematic creation instructions, I'll try to follow that.

3. Do you know If I can work with Allegro-CIS instead of Allegro HDL as my project manager's schematic entry?

4. If not, if there any simple way to refer HDL to CIS component libraries? it looks like HDL standard library doesn't contain many parts, while CIS contains a lot of them.

1 & 2: This is why i ask if have been trained by cadence. Docs and help are usefull but a training is really more efficient

3 : i think you mean capture cis? It is a windows only program. I read you uses linux, so no you can not use capture

4: No way to use directly orcad libray in concept. They are totaly different. Maybe a translator exist but i dont know about it. Personaly, i have never use standard library and create my own one (or custumers one while working for this customer)

Yes, We have SPB installed on our Linux servers, however I installed a local copy of SPB on my windows - CIS is there and if it makes our life easier, we will work with the windows edition.

I think the only remaining question then is if CIS can be used as the "project manager" schematic entry instead of HDL in an integrated manner.

If not I need to choose:

1. Have my schematic done with CIS and imported to the PCB designer.

2. Work in an integrated flow but use HDL to create schematics.

My trouble with "2" is that HDL is a pain to use. I need now to start creating libraries for every part, and the GUI isn't friendly.

Am I getting it right?

Project manager is concept hdl/allegro layout oriented.There is no equivalent (or i dont about know it...) for Ocard Capture/allegro layout. Allegro layout can be started from orcad capture and cross probe. It works, just a little less usefull than concept/allegro with projmgr (according to MY experience, but i use concept since 1994...) You can of course extract a netlist from capture and use it in allegro; back annotation works also but with some anoying effects (it will create local modified components to handle swaps) Capture is more "intuitive" for beguiners but i think concept is more powerfull BUT really less intuitive. The kind of projects you will design can also guide you( for exemple, large projects with reuse of modules is better done witrh concept; now capture can do it but the limitations are quick here... will need more effort/checks for these kind of project. For "standard" project, capture does the job as well as concept. Thjs is MY experience about both of them)
