Board Geometry OUTLINE subclass warning

Hi,

I have always used the Board Geometry OUTLINE subclass for my board outlines.  My board house wants a 1 mil trace on one of the layers as the board outline, so I've been using that subclass and including BOARD GEOMETRY/OUTLINE Gerber Film Record in the Artwork Control Form.  Since upgrading to 17.2, I am getting the warning: "WARNING(SPMHA2-118): Board Geometry subclasses, DESIGN_OUTLINE and CUTOUT are the preferred subclasses for defining a board outline..."  DESIGN_OUTLINE won't let me define a line width, and so doesn't really help me.

What is the reason for this warning?  Can I just ignore it?

Thanks!

John

    Hi,

You could always use Shape > Decompose Shape to copy the Shape from BOARD GEOMETRY/DESIGN_OUTLINE to BOARD GEOMETRY/OUTLINE so the line width could be change on the original Outline subclass.

Start the decompose shape command, change the Copy to Layer Class/Subclass to BOARD GEOMETRY/DESIGN_OUTLINE and uncheck Delete shape after decompose then select the Shape on BOARD GEOMETRY/DESIGN_OUTLINE.  This will copy the Shape as individual lines onto BOARD GEOMETRY/OUTLINE.  It is an extra step but it appears that the enhanced DRC Checks require a Shape on BOARD GEOMETRY/DESIGN_OUTLINE

    Hope this helps,
    Mike Catrambone

It's a few extra steps, but that'll work. Thanks Mike.

p.s. I'm using OrCAD PCB Editor v17.2-2016 S001 (5/2/2016) and the menu option is Shape-->Create Lines From Shape

I know this is a 2 year old thread (that I commented on before), but has a better solution to this been added since?  I still have this problem and converting DESIGN_OUTLINE class shapes to OUTLINE class lines every time I get an updated MCAD file is becoming a huge PITA.

    John,

You can still build an outline the way you want per the supplier on the BOARD GEOMETRY/OUTLINE layer. However, the outline needs to be a line not a shape. The  DESIGN_OUTLINE is for a shape ONLY. That's why you cant change it's width. you can only reshape it.
