shapes become broke

I am trying to place a rectangle pad and associating it with a certain net. every time i place it though after i select done, the shape becomes broken and registers as an out of date shape. so i have to go into display, turn everything off, expose it with boundary, select the shape using shape->select shape and delete it. otherwise i cannot delete it. why does it do this? why is it not just place a copper pad?

not only that, but if i try and place the pad ont he top layer it doesnt care and it places the broken box on the bottom layer

I guess that you are using PCB Editor, which exact version would be helpful. PCB Editor is a netlist driven environment so parts, nets and connectivity are determined from the netlist that is imported into the brd file, the connections show up as "rats" when the parts are placed in the canvas, and rules are assigned in the Constraint Manager. It is possible to get some PCB Editor licenses to enable netlist creation and editing just within the PCB Editor environment but not a commonly recommended approach to PCB design.

sorry for not being more specific. Allegro 16.6 PCB designer. but that answer did not really address my question. I will assume i had a bad formed question. I do not want to associate it with a net that is not in existence. I am merely trying to create a pad to use as a thermal heatsink so I want ot associate the pad with the net of the tab so that I can create vias and displace heat to the other side of the PCB. I do not know if this is the real fix but I was able to get it to work by getting a certain order of operations. When I did things In a certain order, ie click create rectangle, options->choose proper side and net, click start position, right click and adjust params, click end position. it seemed to work. but it seems silly that I cannot just click start than choose all other options and then click out. I was doing that for many of them so far and no issues. it is like a random bug that does random things if you do it out of order. I had some be placed as static boxes also instead of dynamic.

When you created the shape did you Assign it to a net?

You can assign a net to a dynamic shape after it is created.

yeah, before this was my order of operations that was given problems
    1) create rectangle
    2) left click start point
    3) go to options tab, select layer and net
    4) left click end point
it then broke the shape and even though I chose top layer the shape would be broke on the bottom layer.

    Try:-

    1. Shape - Rectangle

    2. Set the Options menu to layer Etch and side, dynamic copper, pick the net name.

    3. Draw the shape you want.

    4. Right click - Done to complete.

If you set the layer after the start point it still draws the shape on the original layer you had selected so this could be why you see an issue.
