Placing 860 LEDs on pcb

Doing a job where customer requires 860 LEDs placed to form a seven segment digit. Trying to avoid manually placing each LED so......

I was given a DXF file with each LED located based on the center of the part. What would be the easiest way to get the parts placed?

Should I extract (manually) the x,y coordinates from the DXF and generate a placement file?

What is the syntax needed for the placement file?

    Have you ever used the Align command in placement mode?

    I have used it, many times. Handy tool but it only works on already placed components.

    I'm pretty sure that it's not the answer you want, and unless you're really set-up for it, then probably more work than it's worth, but IDX is perfect for this.  In the mechanical files, they set up the footprint name for each part, and then the parts can get loaded automatically when you load the IDX.

    Given that's probably not what you want, then yes, extracting X,Y location and creating a simple text file is probably the easiest.  I think that all the tool needs is Ref Des, footprint symbol name, X, Y, Rotation and Mirror as columns in a CSV file.  I always forget and the fastest way to figure it out is to place one or two components randomly, export a placement file, and then that will provide you the proper format.

    The format is pretty simple.  You can place a part in the database and then use File > Export > Placement to see what it looks like.

    I would hope that the LEDs are placed on a standard array?  If so then you can place the parts by using a script as said above but does that really solve the whole problem?
    I suspect you have either 1:8 or 1:16 driver to LED ratio.  I would think you really want to understand how to do place replicate -- this allows the entire circuit with parts, traces, vias to be replicated.
