Simple Part Creation Process - advice requested

I'm new to Cadence and working through a part creation process for a common library accessed by multiple users.

I see a blog question earlier on something similar but I'm just wanting to see if I'm heading in the right direction with what I'm doing.

First I create a padstack and use that in creating the PCB footprint. When I need to combine that with a schematic symbol into a part I choose the library that I want the new part to reside in and open it in Capture then right click on it in the file tree and select Add New Part. In doing that I can create the part schematic symbol as well as assign the footprint to it that I created earlier and save it back to that library for use.

I'd just like some advice on whether this is the best process to create parts using only Capture CIS and PCB Editor without implementing a separate option like PCB Librarian right now. Please relate a better process for me if possible based on your experience.

    That's the Capture method. If you are using CIS the all the properties including PCB Footprint are added into an ODBC compliant Database (Excel, Access, SQL) and then when you add the part from the database (Place - Database Part) you see the symbol, footprint and corresponding properties before placing the part.

    Thanks Steve. I appreciate the comment. I was trying to get a simple overview apart from the spreadsheet\access interaction. I think you're saying though that this process works but it may be more flexible to introduce an Excel spreadsheet as a central location to tie things together? Then I could pick generic sch symbols and footprints and assign them to specific parts through Excel? Then I assume when I placed a part in Capture that it would have that part defined from the spreadsheet. Do you know of a source I could use to tell me how to set that up?

    Hi - If you look under the Cadence Help there is a CIS User Guide that gives more detail. I would also say there is a free starter database www.orcadmarketplace.com/.../Default.aspx that is very good for new users. It is an Access database but should give you a good starting point. You should also consider OrCAD CIP. Nice easy interface as well as a good starting point.

    Thanks again Steve. I'll try that route. Is the help in the Cadence website here or in the tool itself for the CIS User Guide?
    Would you say that my process works but is more flexible and probably better with the database introduced? Especially as a library grows?

    It's in the installation. From the Start Menu look for All Programs - Cadence Release 17.2-2016 - Cadence Help. Yes your process works but CIS is a much better way to go - especially when you have a larger library and more users. More control and less error prone.
