List of classes

Hi,

I'm having trouble finding a reference that lists the various classes and subclasses in the PCB editor and their intended purpose.

For example, where can I draw lines and shapes that are used as a guide to the designer where to place components? In other words, there should be no other purpose or constraint on this class except to add shapes and text. Sort of like the silkscreen class.

See the recent post on Active Class and Subclass, apart from Areas, PCB Editor doesn't have restrictions on Classes, Subclasses and intended usage. Usage can be implied by name but PCB Editor doesn't strictly enforce the application of Classes and Subclasses. Any Class may contain up to a total of 200 subclasses so there is quite a lot of scope for user defined subclasses. You might want to create Board Geometry / Place_Guide_Top (and Bottom) for your purposes in this case, once created the Subclass will appear under the Board Geometry Class to control Display, Colour assignment and output.

Another possibility using areas, rather than lines, would be to use Room Outlines drawn on the board and ROOM property values attached to the symbols to control placement. Room Outline properties allow for strict, or more lax, symbol placement within Room Outlines. Room properties can be added to parts in schematics and transferred to PCB Editor through the netlist, if the required Room Outline doesn't exist, the ROOM property value attached to the symbol will have no effect.
