CIS Variant - Cannot Link Database part -

Hi,

I have to build different variants from my schematic and try to link a part in the part manager, that have the same footprint, but a different name for the schematic part.

If I try this I get the message "Cannot link database part on this variant because the schematic parts differ".

My problem is, that I have a pci express connector with different moduls which are connected.

You need to have a "common", but unused, Schematic Part for both of the parts. As an example, RF circuits often have to interchange passive, RLC, components for certain applications, as you have found, CIS Part Linking doesn't like this much so: the Schematic Part field can have multiple values; design a "common" RLC part, graphics are not too important but keep the same pins / spacing (if practical), can have "Not to be used" text attached to avoid "accidentally" remaining in the finished design; in the database change the Schematic Part field to have "C,RLC" for the caps, "L,RLC" for the inductors, "R,RLC" for the resistors (comma is the default multi-value delimiter). Now one of the "base" parts can be placed in the schematic and, to change the part, first change the Link to Database Part to use the "Common" Schematic Part, then you can Link the required Database Part, because the Schematic Parts agree, then you can Link the Database Part again to get the required Schematic Part. You are not using exactly this example but you could use the same principle for your needs.
