No dialog box results after clicking Auto > Design Reuse In OrCAD Layout 16.0.0

Greetings,

After creating a small layout for the purpose of experimenting with design reuse, then clicking Auto > Design Reuse from the main menu bar, nothing happens. I've tried this on one machine running XP SP2, & two others running Windows-7. Layout works on all three. I'm assuming I'm doing it wrong, but haven't found clear documentation for Layout 16.0. What should be happening?

On a related note, after clicking on Tools > Annotate in the project window of the source Capture schematic, then choosing the Layout Reuse tab, the box "Select schematics to mark for reuse" is empty.

  Where am I going wrong?

  Thanks,

    Steve Kleiser

Check out the lay_ug.pdf in the doc\lay_ug directory of the installation, chapter on Design Reuse which could provide some clues.

    Apologies if this reply ends up duplicated. Replied via email, but it didn't appear to arrive, so re-posting directly;

    oldmouldy,

      Thanks for the reply.

I'd run across "...OrCAD_16.0/doc/lay_ug/06_5_DesignReuse.html" over the weekend, & (I think) followed the instructions in the section "To create an external design reuse schematic:" step by step.

While working through the following "To annotate the Capture schematic for external design reuse:" section, the "Select schematic(s) to mark for reuse" box in the Annotate Layout Reuse tab was empty. If I okayed the dialog box anyway, Capture crashed.

However, after loading the file on my XP (work) machine this morning, an error box popped up complaining about the path to the external schematic referenced by the hierarchical block. That made sense since I'd loaded the directory onto a USB stick, so I updated the path & the external schematic was then listed in the schematics to mark box!

So did the path correction fix this somehow? I'd previously been able to "descend" into the hierarchical block to the external schematic.
Okaying the dialog box then succeeded in annotating.

Re-use in Layout works too (when following the directions) for a single instance of a 3-element Pi network, deliberately kept very simple for test purposes.

By any chance is there a tutorial for Capture & Layout design reuse? I found one on youtube, but it's for Allegro, & we only have Capture & Layout 16.0.

    Thanks again,

I doubt that you will find any tutorials on OrCAD Layout now, beyond the documentation, since the product has been End Of Life since the end of March 2009. PCB Editor has removed the need to have "schematic driven" Design Reuse since all interaction with Modules, used for Reuse, has been moved to a PCB driven process.

    Oldmouldy,

Disappointing, but I suppose I shouldn't be too surprised. My employer has declined to update our capture & layout tools for quite a while now (we're very cost conscious). I advocate updating from time to time, but suspect no one wants to risk the expense.

I was able to get reuse to work for a very small arbitrary ckt in both Capture & Layout on a 2008 vintage XP machine, but annotation causes Capture to crash on two different newer Windows-7 machines. Transferring the same working project folder to either of the Windows-7 machines hasn't worked so far.

Not sure of the best way to troubleshoot. Maybe copy the capture.ini & layout.ini files from the working machine to the Windows-7 machines?

I took an old Dell Inspiron 1100 w/ Windows XP (SP1 or 2) out of the closet over the weekend, & tried some of the same files from there. In Capture, reuse annotation worked just fine. Haven't tried in Layout yet. But the two machines on which reuse annotation is working are both older XP machines, & the two where it's not are both Windows-7. It was just out of curiosity that I tried the 2nd XP machine, & was surprised to see the positive result.
