Orcad Capture - Slow Graphics response on windows 10

Hi,

I have an issue with capture 17.2 base release and current ISR 031 running on windows 10 pro. What is going on is the screen refresh is slow when
capture is running. When capture loads it seems like you can see the tool bar icons getting drawn on the window, then they refresh and appear.

Moving Capture tool bar Icons across the screen has the effect of huge mouse trails on the canvas. The PCB editor works fine, Display is very fast.
I tested capture v17.2 on windows server 2008 R2 and it works well.

Things I tried.

Re-Install
Checked Licensing - No issues found
Verified graphics card drivers were fine - Checked ok PCB editor is really fast.
Checked windows logging etc - Nothing found.
Ran capture as an admin - Made no difference.
Disabled Firewall and anti virus software - Made no difference.

The issue seems to be related to win 10 Pro as things work fine on winserver 2008. I will do some more checking but in the mean time
if anyone has any pointers, that would be a big help.

Thanks Paul.

Well in a way you have confirmed that I was not loosing my mind. I did a little more digging on this and here is what I found.

I ran a windows "Proc Trace" on capture as it loads on windows 10. The trace showed that every .tcl module getting called by capture has "Buffer OverFlow issues "
In addition when capture is installed on windows 10 the installer tries to install .net 4.5 but .net 4.5 is not really supported anymore in windows 10 because
.net 4.6/7 is part of the windows 10 operating system. You would need .net 4.5 if installing on win7/win server so perhaps the installer is just a bit out of date.

The fall creators addition on my system proved to be the turning point on capture for me. Capture is not very usable. 2d acceleration on the capture IDE
does not seem to work. I found drawing on the canvas to be ok but all in all capture is no where near as fast running on win 10 as it is on windows server 2008.

I found no graphic related issues running the PCB tools, Graphics on win 10 with allegro/orcad pcb perform really well. I also did a proc trace on allegro
as it was loading and found no "Buffer Overflow issues" I checked CM in allegro and didn't notice anything strange but will check again.

I found today that MS has issued a patch to the 1709 ver of win 10 that addresses slow graphics in the edge browser among other things. I will update
to the latest win 10 that includes this recent patch and see how capture works.

    Thanks Paul.

    Hey guys,

I too have the same problem for 2 months now and god it it is annoying. I am trying to pinpoint the problem but i cannot. I have done fresh installations, changed drivers (radeon), i even formatted the pc. Nothing worked. And since i am not a programmer i had no idea what to do. Looks like i'll go back to w10 v1703 and wait patiently.

Since I have exactly the same problem (Win10Pro 1709 - 16299.192, Orcad Capture CIS 17.2-2016-S031), I'm just curious if you were able to check that MS patch. Any success?

Hi Michal. I did indeed update but no luck, 2d performance in capture on win 10 is seriously slow.

As of January 4th my windows 10 build is at  1709 (Build 16299.192) - fully up to date.

The basic same issue remains. Moving capture tool bars around cause ghosting of the toolbars or screen corruption.

2D graphic acceleration in the capture ide does not look to be working. I have a case open with cadence so hopefully they will resolve this issue soon

    Thanks Paul
