Update symbols (footprints) warning

WelshMart

In OrCAD PCB Designer, when I perform an 'Update Symbols' for all symbols (footprints) in a design, I get back a warning that some symbols cannot be found in my directory search path.

On closer inspection I find that the symbols in question are not on our system but more importantly they are not used in the design anyway.

The symbols are under the "Shape and flash symbols" category.

How can I find and delete these symbols from the design?

"Shape and Flash" will be used in the Padstack definitions. You can get some clues from Export>Quick Reports>Padstack Definition Report (Tools>Quick Reports>Padstack Definition Report for the legacy menus) to see where the Shape and Flash get used. You could use Export>More>Libraries (File>Export>Libraries for the legacy menus), select the "Shape and Flash symbols" only to get them dumped, SSM files will be the Shape Symbols and FSM files will be the Flash Symbols, Update Symbols will then find them if the Symbols are dumped, or copied, to locations set for the PSM path. Shapes will be for any "irregular" shaped pads and the Flash will be to support negative artwork, potentially not required for positive artwork. You might not be able to remove them all, especially for any irregularly shaped pins.

    Hi, thanks for the reply.

I have previously done what you suggest and exported the libraries. The symbol that I get the warning about is a Flash symbol.

If I open the .dra, it is a small circular (0.0635mm radius) piece of top etch with a dummy net property.

I also did as you suggest and put the symbol in my folder pointed to by my library path. And yes this will stop the warning.

However there are other similar Flash symbols in other designs that require me to do the same for them.

I would rather not put unnecessary symbols into my libraries simply to avoid warnings.

As they are not used in the design, is it possible to delete them from the design? If yes can you give me some help on how to do it.

    Thanks.

Yes, you can delete them from the design by removing them from the Padstack, Tools>Padstack>Modify Design Padstack, select the Padstack in the canvas, activate Options and Edit to get to the Padstack Editor, look at the Design Layers / Mask Layers for a definition including Flash and the flash symbol, HINT: clear the Flash Symbol Name BEFORE changing the definition to not use Flash. You can also edit your library Padstacks in a similar manner, once you know the Padstacks that are using Flash - if you go the editing library way, you can use Tools>Padstacks>Refresh and All to refresh all of the Padstack definitions in the design, also fixing the library Padstacks means not seeing this in future designs.

Thanks for the help... But I've opened up ALL padstack in the design and none of them have the flash symbol attached to them.

If I click on the select box next to 'flash symbol' of any/all of the design padstacks, the flash symbol I would like to delete from the design is available to attach to the padstack.

But currently none of the padstacks use this flash symbol.

From the past posts on this topic, "something" in the design is referencing some "shape and flash" Symbols since having them on the path lets you update symbols. You could check that you are running the latest hotfix, 16.6-2015.s104 or 17.2-2016.s032, see if a Check>Database Check (Tools>Database Check with the legacy menus) with all of the options checked repairs anything, Tools>Padstack>Modify Design Padstack and Purge in Option will remove any unused Padstacks from the design. If that doesn't fix it, you will need to provide the board data for examination.
