Recommended method of defining generic microvia padstack

What is the recommended method of defining generic microvia padstack in PCB Editor 17.2?

My attempt was making a regular via padstack with all layers defined. Then go to Setup > BB via  Definitions > Define BB Via and map the start/end layers. However this method  doesn't remove layers on either side of the via and the via goes all the way through the PCB.

*Surely* you don't have to make an individual padstack that goes from layers 1-2 and 2-3 for example: v10h5_1-2.pad and v10h5_2-3.pad. That would be cumbersome.

Your description sounds correct.  The other layers show up in my version as "none" but it routes correctly.  Have you tried routing using these mvias?

I would attach a screenshot but it seems as though that feature has been disabled now. ???

Here is a picture of my setup. The only way I have successfully removed the unused pads on the other layers is to define a layer that matches the exact name of my layer in PCB Editor in the padstack. But this makes the padstack only able to be used when, for example, layer 2's gerber is named "L2". Is there a method of making this generic?

    Attempted generic method:

    Another attempted generic method:

Only method  I have found that works:

The reason why the first method didn't work is because I didn't have the correct layers selected so PCB Editor thinks I want the via all the way through the PCB.  Not exactly sure how at 2:16 in this video the via popup opens. It would be ideal to select this on the fly. Does Steve have any recommendations on how that menu is activated?

If you have Cadence support, this video series is a great learning series for micro/blind/buried/stacked vias.

Just change the Routing mode from Alt to WL (working layer) then enable the layers you want to use. There is a video on Working Layer as well.
