Getting alt_symbols into existing design

We have a layout that is complete, but the footprints need to be changed to the alt_symbols called out in Orcad. Importing the netlist as usual leaves the existing footprints as they are. How can we tell it to replace the footprints with the alt_symbol without having to start all over with component placement? Thanks for any advice you can offer.

Hi, Select a symbol, Un place the symbol then re-place the symbol. When replacing the symbol on the board that is attached to your cursor, right click and choose "alt_symbol"

I don't believe there is a way to globally replace every primary symbol on the board that is placed with the alt_symbol while updating logic. My thinking is that even if it was possible there is no guarantee that the existing etch would be either enough or to little to physically connect to the pins on the new alternate symbol.

    Paul.

Thank you for responding. Yes, we thought of that, but with 511 parts on this layout, we are hoping there is a quicker way.

You could modify the schematic so that the ALT-Symbol becomes the Primary and vice-versa. Then when you import the net list the correct part will be placed I think.

If you "Export->Placement" then you can edit that file and replace the symbol with the alternate name.  Then "Import->Placement" and select the option to update even if placed.  If you only have one or two symbols to change then it's easier to just get into the place menu and move the part and select the alternate symbol.

that will not work, if it did that would totally eliminate how the alt_symbol is supposed to function. That means if you use an alt_symbol every time you read in a netlist the primary would get placed?
