Exporting 3D files for your Mechanical team's consumption

Has anyone received complaints about your exported files needed by your Mechanical team? The two biggies that i get all the time. - File sizes and all those model assembly parts they have to deal with. They really would like to see one merged solid model of the PCB and its components. The reason for me asking is that I want to submit a ticket to Cadence. It would be to get them to add and output option to generate one part model. So, all your responses will help in the justification on my request.

Cheers

I own both sides of the process here (electrical and mechanical) and it sounds like you are dealing with some lazy mechanical guys,.  No WAY I would want my mech models merged into one.  Yes, it does take a little bit of time to import but I can change that once the import is done.  Sigh.... your experience sounds like the clients that have failed in the past. Lazy, lazy, lazy.

Exporting STEP from the 3D Canvas tool gives a lot more detail than exporting from the Allegro/Orcad File menu.

Its easier just to give soldermask openings as a DXF and don't include copper features on the assembly except for component holes.

I'd make a statement about MEs insisting on laptops if I had any energy left.
