Allegro to Solidworks .IDX transfer

Is anyone able to make the bidirectional IDX ECAD / MCAD collaboration work so that 3D models are transferred between the MCAD and ECAD environments?

If you have made it work what did you do (any user guides / step by step instructions out there)?

Our problem is that our boards are too big to export as a STEP files from PCB to Solidworks. We need the mechanical properties of all of the parts to check for interference and alignment of connectors etc.

We have had a few blind attempts at making this work, but without any guidance documentation we have no idea what we are doing.

IDF is enhanced IDF as far as I can tell.   No step integration.

I build a Step assemblies in Allegro and send it back with IDX changes.

In your case, I would be inclined to make a separate copy of the board, unplace anything that they don't care about.   Give them a step assembly of the stuff they do care about.

A compromise has to come from somewhere and ME's get grumpy when heatsink design and thermal sims are impaired by a "slow model".

Here's a trick I've used to get models to the solidworks designer - create a simple board with the models imbedded in Allegro - export the STEP with models 'exported' and let the SW guy add them to his library. Saved my designer 3-4 hours just the other day when I supplied a 3D model to him this way.

When you transfer to the ME are you using the MCAD collaboration feature (IDX) that tracks the changes? Does the system (probably Circuit works mainly) care where the step library for the components lives, or can you point to any location?

Sorry for the questions, but I have been unable to get any help from our channel partner to get this working and I'm unable to retire integration risk in the manner seamlessly advertised by Cadence :-)
