Yes - the install paths are different, C:\Cadence\SPB_17.2 and C:\Cadence\SPB_17.4. You have different icons and they will point to different locations of the exe's

Do you still have to use the Cadence switch release program ?

Are they completely independant or do they share settings ?

No because it no longer requires the PATH variable. You can start 17.2 or 17.4 without issue. For schematic there are two separate folders %HOME%\cdssetup\OrCAD_Capture\17.2.0 and 17.4.0. This is for the capture.ini file. For PCB they use the same pcbenv folder (%HOME%\pcbenv) but there isn;t an issue with this. The PCB Footprints all stay at 17.2 unless you use some 17.4 technology in the footprint. Both compatible with each other. If you need to there is a Downrev from 17.4 to 17.2.

Could we somehow change the default version associated to .mcm or .brd files? it seems like changing the CDSROOT system variable does not help. Thanks!

I've always done that by selecting a BRD file, then  >OpenWith >Choose Another App.

Don't forget to review the checkbox if you want to change the association with the filename extension.

For reference, here are the paths.

    C:\Cadence\SPB_16.6\tools\pcb\bin\allegro.exe

    C:\Cadence\SPB_17.2\tools\bin\allegro.exe

    C:\Cadence\SPB_17.4\tools\bin\allegro.exe
