Self referencing Hierarchical parts schematics

I am building a library of symbols I mainly download using the Place>search providers.. function (here is an example downloaded from SamacSys for MCP23S17-E/SO)

Some of them seem to define a hierarchical relationship to... themselves. 
See below screenshot for instance.

I do not have a deep understanding of the system yet, but this makes little sense to me.

Is there something I am missing out of the global workflow or am I right thinking this self referencing is kind of a glitch?

    The implementation is the SPICE model name and it is often the name of the symbol.
