AutoPlace in Allegro

I'm finding that the longest step in the layout process is placement and fanout.
I haven't seen any threads in this forum about AutoPlace. Does anyone use it or had any success with it?

The documentation is airly extensive, but it doesn't really perform as expected. It actually seems to be performing as a grouping function, merely getting the parts on the board in a general area, and most times failing on the simplest of tasks.

If I want to speed up the grouping process, I can get much quicker results by doing a quickplace around the perimeter of the board and cross-probe the schematic, or do Place Manual and select by schematic page#.

    placement can be a real issue without cross probe capabilities. I've used OrCAD and DxDesigner for 3rd party front ends with cross probing. As of late we have a really nice tool that crossprobes from DX > Allegro even with hierachy, many levels deep. I'm able to place by circuit/sheet or heirarchical block. No more typing those refdes's in or making lists/rooms properties/group properties or flagging them in the schematic. The company that made it is called Cadplex. Believe me, 9000+ parts on a board, you need cross probing.

  • I also suggest to take a closer look at the PCBNavigator from Precience which provides real time Cross-probing between DxDesigner and Allegro PCB. The cross probing is real time, meaning, you click on the net/comp in DxDesigner and it automatically zooms in or highlights in Allegro.   • hi, i do use the autoplacing feature.. but you are right.. it doesnt seem to work fine... the main problem i have regarding that.. is the compoment autorotation... IT DOESNT DO IT... so for narrow pcb it will place the resistor horizontaly instead of verticaly.
    anyone knows how to set that up!!!
