Graphics in Gerber format are drawn using apertures. For instance, a trace with a width of .010 inches would typcially use an aperture of .010 inches and "Draw" the line representing the trace. A shape, like a pad for instance, may be "Flashed". A .040 inch pad would use a circle of .040 inch diameter and simply flash that shape. Naturally, for a complete design there are many different size apertures needed. In RS-274 format, a separate table of apertures is needed to produce the visible design. In RS-274X, the apertures are attached to each shape used. Hope this helps

If you want to generate gerber data that does not include the embedded apertures and macros (RS274X) you

o Open the artwork control form using the menu selections Manufacture >Artwork
o At the bottom of the form select the button labeled "Apertures..."
o In the "Edit Aperture Wheels" form select the "Edit..." button.
o In the "Edit Aperture Stations" form select the correct units ( Inches or Millimeters" and then select "Auto->" and pick either Without "Rotation" or "With Rotation" depending on your fabrication house requirements. The form will fill with the aperture station, geometry and rotation if any. At the bottom of the form will be the number of apertures generated. OK the form when it is complete.
o OK the "Edit Aperture Stations" form.

This will generate the art_aper.txt file that your fab house will need.

o In the "General Parameters" tab of the Artwork Control form select the device type, Gerber 6x00 or 4x00 which has better arc resolution. In the Format section use and Integer and Decimal number that will allow correct generation of the film(s). Usually one place greater than the board accuracy will suffice.
o Set the Output units to the correct format (Inches or Millimeters)
o Select the "Film Control" tab.
o Set the correct film control options for each of the films such as suppress unconnected pads, Negative or positive plot mode etc.
o Select the film(s) you want to generate
    o Select "Create Artwork"

and the most important step in this process.....

Review the photoplot.log file for any warnings or errors.

o OK the Artwork Control form - this will generate the art_param.txt file.

o create a zip file of the .art files, the art_param.txt and the art_aper.txt file and send to your fab house

You can also load the films back into Allegro to review the artwork by selecting File > Import >Artwork. tyhese can be loaded into a new blank design or into the current design on user defined subclasses. I'd reccomend that tey not be loaded onto etch subclasses as the DRC engine will perform a DRC update which could be a slow process.
