Matrices: Format for MATLAB to ADAMS Import

Jason Moscatello
Jason Moscatello 7 months ago

I'm looking to generate some matrices in MATLAB I'd like to use in ADAMS.  I've having trouble finding information on how to format the MATLAB output to import into matrices in ADAMS.  Are there any good examples out there?  Thank you!

With Regards,

Jason

Hi Jason Moscatello , I tested this out on v2023.3 on my end and could run without issues. Please could you create a Support ticket for this and contact me through there?

Clarification, any information on the two MATRIXx formats ADAMS can import into a matrix would also be helpful.  Thank you!

Hi Jason Moscatello , there is a section of the documentation which deals with the expected format(s) of a matrix file:

    - Adams Basic Package > Adams View > Adams View > Building Models > Data Elements > Matrices > About the Format for Matrix Data Files

The section also includes an example of each.  As mentioned in the above section, it also requires specifying the Fortran number formatting.

Additionally, here is a simple example excerpt that I have labelled for (hopefully) clarity:

Thank you, I have a text matrix outout to a textfile here:

I attempted to import into a matrix using a Elements >  Data Elements > Create a New Matrix and pointed it at the file.  No errors but nothing imported either.  Any idea what I'm missing?

    Hey Jason,

Saw your message pop-up and I'm curious about this too, so I figured I'd try to help out. I re-created your matrix file here and tried to import it on my local Adams Installation of 2025.2 (A/View). I got an error, see below.

I've tried to fix a few things here and there, but I'm still getting the same error. You've got 2 spaces between your first and second columns, and the "F" in your FORTRAN formatter is lowercase. I fixed both of those but to no avail. Curious to see what Alex might think is the issue.

    - James

    Hi Both,

You're correct, the issue seems to be with the Fortran number format.  The number (3) after 'F' (not 'f') is the 'block' size, including the whitespace, you have up to 5 characters required in your file.  With ADAMSMAT2, you can specify 'up to' a value, so to be more flexible to allow larger numbers you could use, for example:

    3F8.1

    [Tested in v2025.2]

    ADAMSMAT2
    1
    Timing
    Timing FULL RORDER 8 3 24 ( 3F8.1 )
    0.0 0.5 0.0
    0.0 0.5 0.5
    0.0 0.5 0.0
    0.0 0.5 0.0
    0.5 0.0 0.5
    0.5 0.0 0.0
    0.0 0.5 0.0
    0.5 0.5 0.5

Can you test with the above?

Thank you both.  The input .txt file has been modified:

Still results in no import when "Apply"ed, and no errors popping up.

This is version 2023.3 if that is relevant.
