Creating a Flex Ribbon Stiffener

Folks,

How would I perform a signal integrity analysis with either Sigrity or Keysight ADS's SIPro using an existing Allegro flex ribbon cable layout that I would like to know what impact an FR4 20 mil stiffener will have on all of the high speed digital signals that run beneath the FR4 stiffener?  In a 3D world, this would appear as a rectangular "bump" at the end of the flex ribbon cable.  I do not think adding a stackup in the layer stackup editor will set this structure up correctly.  Do I make a "symbol" or part and add it to the layout like another component in the schematic?  That is the only way I could think of for structuring this cable for analysis.  Is there a better way?

With flex ribbon cables being used more often these days, this should kind of be automatic with any new layout tools where a stiffener will have a X-Y dimension and a Z thickness of some material that has a dielectric and loss tangent function.

    Hello cstocci52,

Cadence Clarity 3D Layout and Sigrity PowerSI supports Rigid-Flex PCB extraction for Allegro PCB layout designs. You can refer to the following documents:

    1) Clarity 3D Model Extraction Flow for Rigid-flex Designs: https://support.cadence.com/apex/ArticleAttachmentPortal?id=a1O0V00000911lDUAQ

    2) Rigid-Flex PCB extraction using PowerSI: https://support.cadence.com/apex/ArticleAttachmentPortal?id=a1O0V000009MqKgUAK

Multiple “zones” are translated to Clarity/PowerSI with the complete zone boundary and stack-up information for each zone.

Regarding Rigid-Flex structure creation, I would recommend you take a look at the following reference material where you will find an example with Flex Stiffener

Allegro/OrCAD Rigid Flex Design Creation Best Practices: https://support.cadence.com/apex/ArticleAttachmentPortal?id=a1Od0000007MK16EAG

    Thank you,

    Javier
