Points - what are they?

Hi,

I was wondering - what does the points system do?

Why do some posts get 5 points and others 20 - what decides this?

Best regards,

Ole

  •  Good question, I wondered about this too.

And do points mean prizes? :-)

    regards,

    Lawrence.

  •  Oh, I see that you got 20 points for posting a question, and I got 5 points for the reply. I don't know if I would get any additional points for this reply though...

  • Hi Lawrence,

What I don't understand is that sometimes a question get 5 points, at other times more points. The same goes for replies - finding a system seems impossible, but I suppose some kind of algorithm is behind it all.

I'm more curious as to what the points can be used for - or are they just a measure of the individual users activity, but again then 5 points for each question/reply would be sufficient to measure this?

Also, it seems like I got 35 points for the question now, is that because it took a long time to get a reply (the one from you)?

    Best regards,

    Ole

  •  Hi Ole,

Hmmm, strange, I was sure I got only 5 points for both of my previous replies, but now when I look, the second reply seemed to gain 20 points!  I don't understand the algorithm or know the details yet.

I would think that the point system is indeed a measure of someone's activity, and then presumably folks viewing threads etc. can get a feel for the person behind the posting.

Also, it may be a clever way to produce competitiveness to encourage people to post more; they either want to see their own score increase, or they see a friend or colleague and want to compete directly.

As to what other purpose the points serve, I don't know - perhaps they will be turned into a gift card at the end of each year? :-)

Now where can I spend my points?

     Regards,

    Lawrence.
