The EVS Codec: The Movie

17 Jun 2021 • 2 minute read

breakfast bytes logoI have written before about standards in general (including one that is 2000 years old) in my post Why Do Layout Designers Say "Stream Out"? and the new cell-phone vocoder standard in Cadence and Standards...and A New Codec for Your Phone. Today, the video version of that codec and how Cadence was involved in its development and standardization. Cadence has been a major contributor to standards in the EDA ecosystem: Verilog, which we put in the public domain; LEF/DEF, which we opened up to as part of the acquisition of Coopers and Chyan; OpenAccess, which we gave to SI2 to manage (see my post The OpenAccess Story); and we have been, and continue to be, a major contributor to various standards working groups. For example, see:

  • A History of PSS
  • IEEE Unified Power Models
  • IEEE 1838: Taking Test into the Third Dimension
  • Accellera Functional Safety
  • and many more

Now, several people who were involved with the new codec from Cadence, Fraunhofer Institute, Qualcomm, and VoiceAge talk about how the new reference EVS codec was developed, tested, and analyzed.

Standard Proliferation

There always seems to be an XKCD on almost any topic. Standards are no exception!
