Cadence to Acquire Computational Fluid Dynamics Company NUMECA

20 Jan 2021 • 2 minute read

breakfast bytes logo This morning, Cadence announced that it was acquiring NUMECA International to expand its system analysis capabilities with computational fluid dynamics (CFD). NUMECA is a leader in CFD, mesh generation, multi-physics simulation, and optimization.

Cadence's System Analysis Portfolio

This acquisition expands our system analysis portfolio of our internally developed computational software products such as Clarity 3D Solver, Celsius Thermal Solver, and Clarity 3D Transient Solver. For details on those system analysis products, see my posts:

CFD

CFD plays a critical role in predicting real-world product performance for the automotive, aerospace and defense, consumer products, biomedical devices, industrial machinery, and power generation industries. As R&D cycles become more compressed, the need for digital prototyping increases. Exploring the full design envelope and selecting the optimal geometry configuration early on saves time and money. NUMECA's reputation in meshing, turbomachinery, and marine applications is world-leading. The fast-growing CFD market is estimated to be $1.6B. NUMECA's technologies have been adopted by industry leaders such as NASA, ArianeGroup, Honda, and Ford.

Celsius requires CFD for analyzing airflow, fans, heatsinks, and so on. But we will also offer NUMECA as a more generalized CFD platform for additional applications (e.g., external aerodynamics). Likewise, Cadence will integrate our system design and analysis technologies into Numeca’s OMNIS environment.

More details on NUMECA can be found on its website. The acquisition is expected to close later this quarter, and until then it will continue to operate independently.

OMNIS

OMNIS is NUMECA's streamlined CAE workflow for multidisciplinary design and optimization. Industrial CAE, and CFD in particular, is seeing a revolution due to many converging factors arising from industry movement towards high-fidelity modeling that is closer to the real behavior of products—"digital twins".

Many elements must be considered during the modeling process:

  • The diversity of flow configurations and applications
  • The complexity of geometries and physics
  • The requirements for multidisciplinary analysis and optimization, including:
    • Conjugate heat transfer (CHT) coupling flow and heat transfer
    • Fluid-structure interactions (FSI)
    • Fluid-chemistry and multiphase interactions, as in combustion
    • Aero-acoustics coupling flow and noise
